British Museum

The British Museum was founded in 1753 and is the world’s oldest museum.  Visitors can immerse themselves in the diversity of international cultural history on offer here, including such highlights as the Elgin Marbles, the world famous collection of mummies and the Rosetta Stone.  The museum displays a number of exhibitions each year.  Put aside a good deal of time to visit; there are 2 ½ miles/4 kms of galleries!
 
 
Dali Universe/County Hall Gallery
 
The County Hall Gallery is home to the permanent exhibition of over 500 of Salvador Dali’s famous works including sculptures, drawings, paintings and furniture. 
 
Imperial War Museum

This museum traces the history of the two World Wars and many other British and Commonwealth military operations since 1914.  The museum is home to permanent exhibitions including ‘the Holocaust Exhibition’, ‘the Blitz Experience’ and ‘Conflicts Since 1945’.
 
Museum of London

Charting the history of the growth of London from pre-historic times to present day, this museum provides an interesting history of England’s great capital city.
 
Natural History Museum

Home to some of the finest natural history collections in the world, this museum has been an important global centrepiece for its field since it was first opened in 1881.  The ‘Darwin Centre’ gives visitors a behind the scenes view of how the museum works.  It is worth contacting the museum to find out about its regular exhibitions.
 
Science Museum

This museum provides insight into the history and development of science and technology.  There is an IMAX screen housed within the Wellcome Wing. 
 
Saatchi Gallery
Here is the home of Brit Art and many important contemporary installations by artists such as Tracey Emin and Damian Hirst. 

 

Tate Britain
Traditional and contemporary galleries house national collections of British painting from all periods.  The Tate Britain is home to an incredibly important Turner collection.

 

Tate Modern
A collection of international contemporary art can be found within this former power station.  It is worth checking the website to find out about exhibitions scheduled throughout the year.

 
Victoria & Albert Museum
This is one of the world’s greatest collections of fine and applied arts.  The ‘British Galleries’ tells the story of British Art and Design from the reign of Henry VIII to Queen Victoria and up to present day. A new suite of ‘Paintings Galleries’ host 200 works from an extensive collection including works by Constable, Turner and Gainsborough.  The museum features regular exhibitions.
